Who We Are

Legacy Justice Initiative (LeJI) is a South Sudanese non -governmental and non-partisan national organization committed to advancing peace, capacity building of traditional authorities through strengthened customary justice system, protection of abductees through legal aid provision and inclusive youth empowerment and development in line with the United Nations’ Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) Agenda. Rooted in the values of equity, accountability, and resilience, LeJI works to empower young people as agent s of peace while strengthening customary justice systems to ensure equitable access to justice for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

LeJI plays a vital role in promoting peaceful reintegration and long-term recovery for survivors of abduction and individuals returning from captivity or prolonged displacement. Through community-based support mechanisms,  LeJI fosters  social cohesion and  healing,  facilitating safe  reintegration of  returnees  and supporting their access to essential services and livelihood opportunities.

In support of governance and the rule of law, LeJI strengthens relationships between armed youth and military actors through sustained dialogue, trust-building engagements, and civic education. These efforts aim to de-escalate tensions, promote respect for human rights, and cultivate a culture of accountability and peace throughout our areas of operation.

Our Vision

To build a peaceful and just South Sudan where youth are empowered as peacebuilders, customary justice systems are inclusive and rights-based, and all individuals—regardless of gender, ability, or background — enjoy equal access to justice and opportunity.

Our Mission

To promote youth, peace, and security by strengthening customary and formal justice institutions, supporting the reintegration of abductees and survivors, and advancing the rule of law.
